5 Across the Eyes

What better way to celebrate MLK Day than to host a concert in someone's basement having nothing to do with equality? That's exactly what my band mates and I did just a few hours ago.

From left to right: Phil Kehres (rhythm guitar), me (lead guitar), Justin Noggle (guitar/vocals), Talal Sabbagh (drums obviously), Scott Ramage (bass).

We had this concert in Justin Nogle's basement b/c we didn't have enought time to book a gig anywhere else. Phil's leaving in 2 days for an internship with the State Dept. in D.C. for a semester, so this was the first and last (for a while) time we'd be able to play. The turnout was huge, though. My mom, my 2 bros, Nogle's mom, Phil's girlfriend, and his best friend. 6 people in the crowd -- 5 people in the band.

A fun time was had by all, even though the turnout wasn't great. This was a great first gig for the guys (I've had a little performing experience previously), so I can't complain. Plus, my mom liked it.

A Revealing New Year's

I'm back in civilization again after spending an awesome week at a Lithuanian retreat in Michigan. Then it was off to Chicago to celebrate New Year's. The Chicago Lithuanian Youth organization threw a totally kick ass party in downtown Chicago at the Westin River North hotel. I've never seen so many Lugans in one place at the same time. There could have easily been well over 400 people at the banquet. But I digress.

Having just spent a spectacular week in Michigan, I finally realized something. I must put an end to my cynicism. For a time, it was my goal to be that guy in the back of the room making comments about everyone and everything. I definitely accomplished that goal -- and then some. Somehow I thought making other people miserable would make me happy. It did for a while, but then it dawned on me that I will never make any new friends (or any girlfriends) if I keep it up.

My New Year's resolution: I will be a kinder, gentler, nicer Veeter than I have been in the past. The days of my cynical outlook on life are over and done with. I'm a nice guy -- now I'll try to show that.
